Group Discussion Guide

Closer to God, Part 2

GETTING STARTED
Begin your time together by catching up with one another. Take a few moments to share how you have seen God at work in your lives, your families, or your group: “How have you seen God in your life since we last met?”
Scripture References from Message: Mark 9:14-27
Big Idea: Believing in Jesus is both a moment and a journey.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Use these questions to talk through the message together.
  1. The Big Idea unpacked the part of our mission statement “Believing in Jesus”. It’s both a moment, and a journey. What does this look like practically speaking? How does this help people who have yet to make a faith decision in Jesus, AND those who have been following Jesus for years?
  2. Tyler described belief as "growing in confidence of our allegiance to Jesus." How have you seen that confidence grow in your own life? Where would you like to see it grow?
  3. The illustration was given that "faith is like a muscle—the more we use it, the more we strengthen and grow it." For the areas you’ve grown in confidence, what are some practices, experiences, or choices that have helped strengthen you to get you there?
  4. Jesus intends to be our Savior, King, Teacher, and Friend. Which of those descriptions of Jesus is easiest for you to embrace? Which one is most challenging for you and why?
GOING DEEPER
For groups who want to dig further into the scripture or topic.
  1. Read Mark 9:14-27. In v 24, the father says, "I believe; help my unbelief." What do you think he means by this? What does his response teach us about what faith can look like in real life?
  2. What do you notice about Jesus' response to the father's imperfect faith? What does this reveal about Jesus?
  3. The father can't fix his son's situation himself. What might this story teach us about recognizing when we need Jesus rather than simply trying harder?
  4. Where is Jesus inviting you to trust Him more right now—and what might your next step look like?
WEEKLY CHALLENGE
The mission of BridgePoint is for all people to get closer to God by “Believing” in Jesus, “Living” His teachings,  and “Becoming” His people. This is a mission that everyone can be a part of in our community and in our church. This week, take some time to stop, pray, and ask yourself these questions:
  • What step do I need to take to grow in my belief about Jesus?
  • What routines and rhythms in my life need to change so that I can live a life that looks more like Christ?
  • Where do I need to be more intentional and join the work of God in serving and outreach?
