Group Discussion Guide

Closer to God, Part 3

GETTING STARTED
Begin your time together by catching up with one another. Take a few moments to share how you have seen God at work in your lives, your families, or your group: “How have you seen God in your life since we last met?”
Scripture References from Message: Philippians 2:1-5, 12-16
Big Idea: Jesus invites us to build our lives together on His teachings.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Use these questions to talk through the message together.
  1. What does it mean for a relationship with Jesus to be personal, but not individual in nature?
  2.  How has living in Christian community helped you live out the teachings of Jesus? What challenges have you
experienced when trying to follow Jesus alongside others?
  3.  Tyler said, “We will become what we behold and repeat.” Think about what you are “beholding” (focusing on) and
repeating in your life. Are these things helping you become more like Jesus or someone/something else?
GOING DEEPER
For groups who want to dig further into the scripture or topic.
  1.  Read Philippians 2:1-5. In this passage, the word “mind” points to a way of perceiving and understanding the world. Paul,
then, is inviting believers to have the same way of looking at themselves, the world, and others that Jesus did. How might
sharing this same “mind” be practically applied in a community of Jesus followers like BridgePoint Church?
  2.  Read Philippians 2:12-16. In verse 13, Paul says that it is God who does the real work of transformation in and through his
people. How does this truth invite us to both get closer to God and to one another as followers of Jesus?
WEEKLY CHALLENGE
The mission of BridgePoint is for all people to get closer to God by “Believing” in Jesus, “Living” His teachings,  and “Becoming” His people. This is a mission that everyone can be a part of in our community and in our church. This week, take some time to stop, pray, and ask yourself these questions:

  • What would it look like for me to not just be informed, but formed by Jesus this week?
  • What do I need to behold or repeat this week that will help me look more like Jesus?
  • How am I living or not living faithfully in Christian community right now?
