Group Discussion Guide

Family By Design, Part 3

This guide is designed to help your group create a space for genuine connection and conversation within your discussion time. Don't feel pressured to address every question each week. Instead, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you lead your group in uncovering what God intends to communicate during your time together.

This guide comprises three sections: Loving, Learning, and Living. Each section aims to steer your conversation towards meaningful discussions about spiritual growth as individuals and as members of the body of Christ.

LOVING

First moments together as a group to connect and pray (approx. 10-15 min).
  • How have you seen God at work in your life since the last time we met?
  • What has been one high and one low since the last time we met?
  • How did you do with living out what we talked about last time we met?

Open with prayer and invite God to be part of your conversation and relationship.

LEARNING

The majority of the group discussion is devoted to open dialogue, reflecting on God’s Word and its personal application to each of our lives (approx. 60-75 min).

Scripture References from Message: Luke2:41-52

Jesus' parents waited several days before realizing that Jesus was missing from the group. This delay was due to the strong community surrounding Mary and Joseph and the trust they placed in that community to care for their family. Reflect on your own childhood—who played a key role in shaping your faith, and how did they influence your spiritual journey?

How do you think Jesus’ parents felt when they realized He wasn’t with them on the way home? Have you ever experienced a moment where you felt unsure about how to guide your child?

The story of Jesus remaining in the temple at age twelve emphasizes the significance of intentional discipleship and spiritual exposure for children. While it's not always easy, trusting in God’s timing and teachings nurtures children's growth in faith. In what ways can you cultivate a spiritual environment in your home that reflects the engagement Jesus experienced in the temple? How can we weave discussions about faith into everyday life, just as Jesus did with the religious teachers?

What can we learn from how Jesus’ parents initially responded with anxiety, but eventually saw His purpose in the temple? How does this apply to parenting and trusting God’s timing?

As a group, revisit Luke 2:41-52. What particular details, themes, or questions resonate with you from the story? Please share your thoughts with everyone.

LIVING

The challenge for the week ahead is to grow in our faith and lovingly hold each other accountable through the community.

This week, focus on guiding the children or young people in your life toward Jesus by engaging them in faith conversations, creating a faith-rich environment, and being intentional in your actions. Start by reflecting on Jesus’ example in Luke 2:41-52, then take time each day to pray for wisdom, encourage their growth, and listen to their thoughts on faith. Create opportunities to share scripture, lead by example, and reflect on the impact of your efforts at the end of the week. Maybe it means you need to step into opportunities to serve in areas that directly influence children in their faith. Trust that God will guide you as you help nurture their spiritual journey, just as He did with Jesus.
