Group Discussion Guide

I am..., Part 3

GETTING STARTED
Begin your time together by catching up with one another. Take a few moments to share how you have seen God at work in your lives, your families, or your group: “How have you seen God in your life since we last met?”
Scripture References from Message: John 10:7-10, Psalm 91:1-6, Matthew 7:13-14, Hebrews 10:19-20
Big Idea: Jesus is the only door that opens to life.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Use these questions to talk through the message together.
1. What has to go right in your life for you to feel safe and protected? What are the things you tend to rely on to
create that sense of security?

Read Psalm 91:1–6
2. What stands out to you about the different images of safety and protection in this passage?
3. Where do you tend to look for refuge when life feels uncertain, threatening, or out of your control?
4. What do you think is the difference between feeling safe and actually having a place of refuge?

Read John 10:7–9
5. Jesus describes himself as “the door” or “the gate.” What do you know about sheep and shepherds that helps you understand why Jesus might use this metaphor?
6.
A sheepfold was a place of protection, but the sheep still had to go through the gate. What might it look like for us to actually move toward Jesus as our place of safety?
7. What are some “other doors” we’re tempted to walk through when we’re looking for security, identity, or direction?

Read Matthew 7:13–14
8. Jesus talks about a wide gate and a narrow gate. Why do you think the way that leads to life might be less obvious or less popular?
9. What makes the “wide road” appealing? Where do you see that tension in your own life?

Read Hebrews 10:19–20
10.
Hebrews says that through Jesus we can enter into God’s presence with confidence. How does that change the way you think about what Jesus accomplished for us?
11. What does it mean to you that Jesus doesn't simply point toward the way to God, but opens the way to God?
12. If Jesus is the only door that opens to life, what does that mean for the way we understand following Jesus?
13. What is one area of your life where you need to trust Jesus as the door rather than trying to create your own sense of safety or control?
14. What would taking one step through that door look like this week?
WEEKLY CHALLENGE
  • Each morning, spend 5 quiet minutes with Jesus before reaching for your phone and pray: “Jesus, today I choose you as my door to life. Help me recognize your voice and follow you.” Then carry that thought into the day.
  • Notice where you go when you feel stressed, afraid, or out of control. When you notice it, pause and ask: “What am I looking to for safety right now, and what would it look like to turn toward Jesus instead?” (This could be social media, food, productivity, money, approval, distraction, control, isolation, etc.)
