Group Discussion Guide

I am..., Part 6

GETTING STARTED
Begin your time together by catching up with one another. Take a few moments to share how you have seen God at work in your lives, your families, or your group: “How have you seen God in your life since we last met?”
Scripture References from Message: John 14:1-21
Big Idea: How we follow shows who we are following.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Use these questions to talk through the message together.
  1.  Read chapter 13 together (or specifically John 13:18-22 and 13:31-38). Consider the environment of the room, what is taking place, and what is being said. How would you describe the discourse between the disciples and Jesus? What would they be thinking, or questioning, or doubting at this moment?
  2.  Jesus’ response to the disciples in the time of uncertainty and questions is to “not let your heart be troubled,” (14:1) or another way it can be translated is, “put your heart at ease.” When have you experienced a season where you struggled to understand what God was doing? What does it practically look like to trust Jesus when you don't know what comes next, to put your heart at ease?
  3.  Thomas asks a question that millions of people throughout history have asked in one way or another: “How can we know the way?” (John 14:5). Notice that Jesus doesn't respond with a list of instructions or things they need to accomplish. Instead, He points Thomas back to Himself. Why is it significant that Jesus identifies Himself as the way rather than simply telling us how to find it? How should this shape the way we understand our relationship with God?
GOING DEEPER
For groups who want to dig further into the scripture or topic.
  1.  The claim that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, has deep theological significance meaning that Jesus is the way to the Father, so that you can know the truth about the Father, and receive life with the Father. What does this reveal about who Jesus is, and why is it significant that He claims to be the only way to the Father? How should this truth shape the way we live and share our faith with others?
  2.  Following His declaration in verse 6, Jesus tells His disciples that knowing Him means knowing the Father, even saying, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Jesus isn't simply claiming to represent God, but to reveal who God truly is. How does this claim challenge the way we understand God's character? If Jesus is the clearest revelation of the Father, how should His life, teachings, and actions shape what we believe about God?
WEEKLY CHALLENGE
This week, identify one area of your life where uncertainty, fear, or the desire for control is keeping you from fully
trusting Jesus. Spend time reading John 14:1–6 each day. In prayer, surrender that area to God and ask Him to help you trust not merely
in knowing what comes next, but in knowing the One who is the way, the truth, and the life.
