Group Discussion Guide

Stand-Alone Message

This guide is designed to help your group create a space for genuine connection and conversation within your discussion time. Don't feel pressured to address every question each week. Instead, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you lead your group in uncovering what God intends to communicate during your time together.

This guide comprises three sections: Loving, Learning, and Living. Each section aims to steer your conversation towards meaningful discussions about spiritual growth as individuals and as members of the body of Christ.

LOVING

First moments together as a group to connect and pray (approx. 10-15 min).
  • How have you seen God at work in your life since the last time we met?
  • What has been one high and one low since the last time we met?
  • How did you do with living out what we talked about last time we met?

Open with prayer and invite God to be part of your conversation and relationship.

LEARNING

The majority of the group discussion is devoted to open dialogue, reflecting on God’s Word and its personal application to each of our lives (approx. 60-75 min).

Scripture References from Message: Joshua 6:1-21
Big Idea: Don’t let what you see keep you from doing what God said.

How do you typically respond to difficult situations or obstacles that pop up in your life? Do you find yourself responding in/with faith or fear?

Read Joshua 6:1-21 together as a group. How might this story have been different if Joshua hadn’t chosen to believe the LORD before he asked the people to believe the LORD?

Try to put yourself in the shoes (sandals?!) of the people of Israel. What might you be thinking or feeling on day 5 or 6 as you watched the “armed men” march around the city only to return to the camp at night with the walls of Jericho still standing strong before you?

In this section of the text, the phrase “devoted to/for” appears several times as a reference to things marked out for destruction or things that were not to be taken/used by the Israelites once the city was conquered. Why do you think God gave them these instructions? Hint: think about who the victory over the city actually belongs to in this passage.

What would it look like to “keep God with you” this week?

LIVING

The challenge for the week ahead is to grow in our faith and lovingly hold each other accountable through the community.

This week, take some time to identify the “Jericho(s)” you may be facing in your own life. What is God calling you to do to see His victory over that obstacle in your way? What is keeping you from doing what God is leading you to do? Once you’ve identified these things, ask God how you can give these things to Him and let him bring about the victory he wants for you.
