Group Discussion Guide

Storyline, Part 5

This guide is designed to help your group create a space for genuine connection and conversation within your discussion time. Don't feel pressured to address every question each week. Instead, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you lead your group in uncovering what God intends to communicate during your time together.

This guide comprises three sections: Loving, Learning, and Living. Each section aims to steer your conversation towards meaningful discussions about spiritual growth as individuals and as members of the body of Christ.

LOVING

First moments together as a group to connect and pray (approx. 10-15 min).
  • How have you seen God at work in your life since the last time we met?
  • What has been one high and one low since the last time we met?
  • How did you do with living out what we talked about last time we met?

Open with prayer and invite God to be part of your conversation and relationship.

LEARNING

The majority of the group discussion is devoted to open dialogue, reflecting on God’s Word and its personal application to each of our lives (approx. 60-75 min).

Scripture References from Message: Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 2:10
Big Idea from Message: We’re not just saved from something; we’re saved for something.

Read Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 2:10. As followers of Jesus, it seems to be more about the ongoing work of being saved than it is about the moment of getting saved. How does knowing we’re called to “be on the go” change how you view being a Christian? With Jesus’ emphasis being on the church’s “going” and helping others in “becoming”, does that shift where you need to put your energy at all? Explain.

Tyler said “Christianity was never meant to be a sit and soak experience.” What are your initial reactions to that statement? Have you ever been guilty of doing that? How so?

A lot of times when we think of words like “mission” and “go”, we picture places across the sea instead of across the street. What are some ways you can be on mission as the church to your immediate world around you? How can you “go” to where you are planted now, in places like your church community, your family, your work place, etc?

There were 6 key One-Anothers from the message: 1. Love one another (John 13:34-35); 2. Serve one another (Galatians 5:13); 3. Forgive one another (Ephesians 4:32); 4. Encourage one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11); 5. Bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2); 6. Offer hospitality to one another (1 Peter 4:9). Read each scripture if you have time. How well do you do on these? Do you find some easier than others to practice? Which ones are difficult? How so?

This one-anothers list is not exhaustive. Can you think of any more from Scripture? Why is it important to be doing these “one-anothers” well? Which one seems to be the radical way in which to change the world: sharing a list of beliefs with others to agree with, or embodying a transformed community by the way we love, serve, forgive, encourage, bear each other’s burdens, and offer hospitality?

LIVING

The challenge for the week ahead is to grow in our faith and lovingly hold each other accountable through the community.

Church is the community of people living transformed lives by the authority of the saving work of Jesus, in the power of the Holy Spirit, bearing witness to the world the character of Jesus through radical love for one another. This week, identify at least one of the key “one-anothers” from the list that you need strengthening in. Ask God for courage and to show you where you can put one of them into practice. Tell your group about how you did!
