Group Discussion Guide

Your Story Speaks, Part 4

This guide is designed to help your group create a space for genuine connection and conversation within your discussion time. Don't feel pressured to address every question each week. Instead, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you lead your group in uncovering what God intends to communicate during your time together.

This guide comprises three sections: Loving, Learning, and Living. Each section aims to steer your conversation towards meaningful discussions about spiritual growth as individuals and as members of the body of Christ.

LOVING

First moments together as a group to connect and pray (approx. 10-15 min).
  • How have you seen God at work in your life since the last time we met?
  • What has been one high and one low since the last time we met?
  • How did you do with living out what we talked about last time we met?

Open with prayer and invite God to be part of your conversation and relationship.

LEARNING

The majority of the group discussion is devoted to open dialogue, reflecting on God’s Word and its personal application to each of our lives (approx. 60-75 min).

Scripture References from Message: Matthew 5:14–16; 1 Thessalonians. 4:11–12; Titus 2:6–8; 1 Cor. 13:4–7; Ephesians 6:12
Big Idea from Message: Your story usually starts to speak long before the first words are spoken.

Tyler asked the question, “How can our stories speak in places where they’re unwelcome?” Think about the spaces in your life—work, school, family, neighborhood—where people might not be open to your faith. Where do you feel tension about sharing your faith or telling your story? Why is that space difficult? What have you found helpful—or unhelpful—when it comes to navigating those moments?

What do people observe in your life before you ever say anything about faith? How can your everyday actions help open the door to spiritual conversations?

In a culture that prizes bold opinions, Christ followers are challenged to consider whether our words reflect God’s love or just our own need to speak. When you're passionate about faith, how do you make sure your words are shaped by love and not just truth? What helps you know when to speak—and when to wait?

Take the following passages, read them aloud, and discuss why these passages matter:
  • 1 Peter 2:12
  • Proverbs 15:1
  • James 3:17
  • Romans 12:17-18
  • Colossians 3:12-14

One of the most practical aspects of sharing our story in unwelcome places is to discern whether we are reacting in our own power/flesh, or following the lead of the Holy Spirit. In what ways have you felt pressured to speak or act like the world does—even in faith conversations? What does it look like to slow down and be led by the Holy Spirit instead?

LIVING

The challenge for the week ahead is to grow in our faith and lovingly hold each other accountable through the community.

Identify one person or space in your life where your story might not feel welcome. This week, focus on letting your actions (kindness, patience, generosity, integrity) speak first. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom: when to act, when to speak, and when to simply listen. Pray for that person or place daily, and be ready if God opens the door to speak a word of truth in love.
